Successful Management of Concussion
by Chiropractic BioPhysics

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that affects brain function. Effects are often short term and can include headaches and trouble with concentration, memory, balance, mood, and sleep.

Concussions usually are caused by an impact to the head or body that is associated with a change in brain function. Not everyone who experiences a blow to the body or head has a concussion. Some concussions cause the person to lose consciousness, but most do not.
Cause:
Concussion means to shake violently. A concussion happens when a force causes the brain to rapidly move back and forth inside the skull. This may be caused by either a direct blow or by a blow to the body that forces the head to quickly rotate.
Although some sports have higher instances of concussions, such as football, ice hockey, and soccer, concussions can happen in any sport or recreational activity.

Symptoms:
Concussions can cause a variety of symptoms. These may appear right away or may be delayed for several days after the injury. Some symptoms are physical, such as drowsiness. Others are cognitive, like memory loss. In many cases, people with concussions are more emotional than usual.

The most common symptoms of concussion include:
-
Drowsiness
-
Headache
-
Loss of consciousness
-
Memory loss
-
Irritability
-
Confusion
-
Balance problems/dizziness
-
Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
-
Difficulty speaking and communicating
-
Difficulty maintaining mental focus
-
Depression
-
Nausea and vomiting
-
Changes in sleep patterns
Chiropractic Management for Concussions:
Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) is a specific approach within chiropractic care that focuses on spinal alignment and posture correction. It uses a range of techniques aimed at improving overall spinal health, which can have indirect benefits for managing conditions like concussion.

Here’s how CBP might play a role:
-
Spinal Alignment and Posture Correction: CBP emphasizes correcting spinal misalignments and improving posture. Proper spinal alignment may help reduce tension and stress on the nervous system. Although this doesn’t directly address concussion symptoms, it can create a more stable environment for the nervous system to recover.
-
Neurological Function: CBP techniques often aim to optimize nervous system function by ensuring the spine is aligned properly. Since concussions can affect brain function and neural pathways, improving spinal health might support overall neurological function and recovery.
-
Reduced Secondary Stress: After a concussion, the body can be under significant physical stress, which might affect spinal health and posture. By addressing misalignments and improving posture, CBP could help reduce additional strain on the body, potentially aiding the recovery process.
Case Study:
20 Documented Concussions reduced to 6 Concussions Evident case study showing efficacy of Chiropractic Bio Physics treatment protocol:

A 27-year-old male professional rugby player with a 6-year history of 20 documented concussions presented with severe neck and headache pain and disability. X-rays of his neck were taken to measure spinal alignment and posture. Also, neck and headache pain disability and quality-of-life measures were assessed.

After 30 treatment sessions of Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP®), neck spinal alignment and posture rehabilitation using traction, neck and headache pain and disability, and quality of life improved. X-rays showed improved spinal alignment and posture in his neck. Follow-up x-rays 2 years after treatment showed that the improvements to his neck, spinal alignment, and posture were maintained. Follow-up assessment 6 years after treatment showed that the post-treatment improvements in neck and headache pain, disability, and quality of life were maintained. Additionally, the patient reported only two documented concussions in the 6 years following treatment, maintaining the same lifestyle and competing as a professional rugby player at the same level, position, and playing time. Correction of neck spinal alignment and posture allows the spine to function as a healthy shock absorber and increases its ability to decrease stress transferred to the brain from trauma responsible for concussions and may reduce the risk of concussions.
