When was the beginning?

I just wanted you to know that today’s handout is about answering a patient’s question. One of my patients asked me, “So Doc, when did Chiropractic begin? Was it a few years ago or a long time ago?”

So I told her this. Chiropractic began in 1895 when its founder, Daniel David Palmer, (D. D. Palmer) claimed the cause of any health issue could be helped by removing interference in the spine--and needing nothing more than--his hands to do this process.

The name given to this new profession became its identity. Chiropractic when defined means "done by hand" and it’s evolved over the years, like any profession including medicine, but Chiropractic’s fundamental principle is still delivering natural health care.

Spinal manipulation was not an unknown treatment way back in 1895, and D. D. Palmer never claimed to be the first to use manipulation for a person’s ailments. He did claim, however, to be the first person to use specific contacts as short-leverage points for making more specific spinal "adjustments."

Harvey Lillard, a janitor was the name of D.D. Palmer's first patient, and an adjustment reportedly helped Lillard's deafness  and is regarded as the breaking point for the Chiropractic profession.

D. D. Palmer established his science, art, and philosophy of Chiropractic and started a school called the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1905. Many of his first students were medical doctors exploring this new profession. This early period in the history of Chiropractic was a time when many new methods of healing were being explored.

We’re always exploring new ways to help you. If you have a health issue make sure you talk to me. Don’t forget. Your brain and nervous system control ever cell, tissue and organ in your body. Our goal is never to cure you, as the only entity that cures you is your OWN body. Not a drug, not a medical doctor, and not a needle. We just help remove any interference.
